As we commemorate International Women’s Day, we consider the achievements of the business travel sector in supporting women and finding solutions to the ongoing struggles they face.

We’re proud to say, our industry provides a multitude of opportunities for the female population. This is largely due to the variety of roles available, the flexible working practices and the sense of community and belonging.

This day serves as a poignant reminder of the progress we’ve made towards gender equality and the work that still lies ahead. It’s a day to honour the courage, resilience, and contributions of womankind throughout history and in our contemporary world.

Reflecting on Progress

Over the years, we’ve witnessed significant strides towards gender equality in various aspects of life. Women have shattered glass ceilings in politics, business, science, and the arts. From trailblazers like Marie Curie and Amelia Earhart to contemporary icons like Malala Yousafzai and Greta Thunberg, they have continuously challenged norms and inspired change.

The business travel sector itself attracts a range of underrepresented communities as well as, we’re pleased to say, an increasing rise in young professionals. “Travel and tourism employed a marginally higher share of women compared to other sectors globally in 2021 – 39.3 percent compared to a 39.2 percent average1“.

The increased representation of women in leadership roles within the travel sector and the acknowledgement of their talents and capabilities are testament to this progress.

Empowering women

Empowerment lies at the heart of the women’s movement. It involves providing the necessary resources, opportunities, and support they need to thrive. Education plays a pivotal role in this journey, enabling them to unlock their potential and pursue their aspirations.

Access to healthcare, economic opportunities, and reproductive rights are also crucial components of empowerment. By empowering women, we not only uplift individuals but also strengthen communities and societies as a whole.

Working in business travel offers more flexibility as it is a 24/7 service. This can mean flexible shift patterns such as part time, full time, evening and weekend work. And for anyone seeking to balance personal commitments such as childcare, a flexible rota can provide the ideal solution.

Not only that, but people working in the travel industry can easily return to work after a break (paternity/maternity/sabbatical….) with quick and simple refresher training courses. This is what makes a career in the sector an appealing and empowering prospect.

Challenges and Persisting Inequalities

Despite the advancements, women continue to face a myriad of challenges and inequalities. Gender-based violence, discrimination, and limited access to education and economic opportunities persist in many parts of the world.

Travel is a global industry and with it new opportunities are created, and needed, across the world. These include anything from airport workers to travel consultants, to legal, HR, finance or marketing. Travel roles require, and benefit from, many skill sets such as speaking different languages and relationship building, and a love of travelling always helps of course.

We’re proud to work in an industry where women are well represented, empowered and driving positive change.

Call to Action

On this Women’s Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to advancing the rights and opportunities of women everywhere. Let us amplify the voices of those who are marginalised and stand in solidarity with those fighting for gender justice.

"Happy

We must advocate for policies that promote equality, support female-owned businesses, and foster inclusive environments where all individuals can thrive regardless of gender. Change begins with each of us, and together, we can create a world where every woman and girl can realise her full potential.

International women’s day

As we celebrate International Women’s Day on 8th March 2024, let us honour the achievements past and present while renewing our dedication to creating a more equitable future. Let us strive for a world where gender does not limit one’s possibilities and where everyone can live with dignity, equality, and respect.

Together, let us build a brighter tomorrow for generations to come and #InspireInclusion.
